| Favicon's and how to use them |
I know, i've been there too. I've surfed around the web noticing all these cool little icons next to each site's address in my browser often wondering what they are, what they do and how do i get one of my own for my personal website.
The answers to these questions are simple, these little icons you see are called Favicons or Shortcut icons. These icons are / were made so that the show up in your bookmarked pages so that you can easily identify one site from another if they have similar website names.
This idea comes with a benefit, this little icon is your extra little way of getting your brand known and getting your company or site's logo or brand out there.
Now, if you have your own favicon right now and would like to add it, the code for implementing one of these little badboys is as follows:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/ico" />
You take this code and insert it in with your head information (between the tags). All you have to do to make it work is change favicon.ico to your icon's url.
Now, if your image editing program cannot save a .ico format then there is no need to fear. You can modify the code so work for you, all you have to do is save your icon as a .gif or .png file and then modify the code to accept it. Here's how that code looks:

or
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.png" type="image/png" />
If you do not have an icon of your own right now, it's simple to get one. You can either search the web for icons that are 16x16 pixels or you can make your own through Adobe photoshop or MSPaint. Just remember that the icon has to be in either GIF, PNG or ICO format.
